Both halves of our semi are affected. Whose drain is it?

If one pipe serves both houses it is a shared run, and past your boundary it is generally a lateral drain that Anglian Water is responsible for as the sewerage undertaker here. Whoever calls it in, the assessment establishes where the obstruction actually sits before anybody argues about a bill.

Then somebody has to ask them. We cannot enter a neighbouring property without the occupier agreeing to it. If access is refused, the assessment works with the chambers that can be reached and you will be told honestly what could and could not be checked.

That is the classic profile for an old clay run with settled joints. Material catches at a step, builds gradually and narrows the bore until the flow gives up. Jetting is often right for that pattern, because rods can punch a hole through a deposit without actually removing it.

It happens a lot around here. If a chamber is completely sealed under a slab we work from the next accessible point on the run, which is often enough. What we will not do is start lifting your patio, and we will tell you if that is the only way to reach the line.

That separation is useful information. It suggests the trouble is on the soil branch rather than the shared main run, since a blocked main would normally hold everything back together. The chambers get checked in order to confirm which part of the system is still flowing.

Can a hose be run down the side alley between the houses?

Yes, and on this sort of housing that is very often how the job gets done, with the van on the street and the hose taken through to the rear. Let us know if a gate is locked or the alley is shared, so it is arranged rather than improvised on the day.

Do you have to come inside the house?

It is worth saying so when you ring. Caustic products sitting in a chamber change how the work is approached on site, mainly for safety reasons. They rarely shift the sort of solid build up that collects in an old shared run in any case, so nothing has been lost.
